Fostering Public Art
I advocated for a strong update to our City’s Public Art Master Plan because I believe public art can have a positive, material impact on the quality of life in Newark. Public Art can increase civic pride, be educational, and set Newark apart. Art and artists can connect people to each other and their community. The Master Plan Update sets out a vision to celebrate Newark’s culture, highlight our City’s history, and enhance the beauty of our community.
I am excited to see the Plan implemented over the coming years: I think there are a lot of opportunities to bring forward projects that will make Newark a more interesting place to live. One project that I am particularly favorable towards is painting the utility boxes throughout Newark.
But the part of the Public Art plan that I am most excited about is the establishment of the Public Art Commission. The Commission will be able to provide much greater public input into our City’s decision-making processes than if all decisions were only going through the City Council. The more voices from our community involved in the process will lead to better outcomes. This is why I advocated for a dedicated seat for a youth member, which creates a real voice for Newark’s youth in important public policy decisions.
Without the support of the City Council, our new Public Art Commission will not be able to make real the priorities our community wants to see. If re-elected, I will continue to advocate for resources for public art throughout Newark and will support the Commission and greater public participation in all decision-making processes.
