Planning for the Future
Newark’s future will rely on the City being diligent in passing budgets that are sustainable to meet the City’s needs now and in the future. We need to make sure that we are exploring new revenue sources, especially through attracting businesses to Newark that will strengthen our tax base, and continue to wisely manage the expenditure of those financial resources in ways that our community can be proud of. I am enormously proud of the work we have done over the past four years passing strong budgets when many other cities have had to expend reserves. If re-elected, I am committing to supporting these sound practices that have served our community so well.
I also believe it is time for the City of Newark to revise our General Plan. The last update to our General Plan was in 2010, 18 years following the 1992 General Plan that preceded it. I believe this timeframe should be followed for the next update, which would mean beginning the update process within the next couple of years. The reality is, Newark has changed since 2010 (when I was in High School), and so have its needs. Revisiting our vision for our City as a whole will be essential in meeting future challenges that the City will need to address. I am confident that we will be able to meet any challenge that the future throws at us, and having an updated General Plan will be a tool future Councils can use to solve those problems.
